Photographs and Memories

It’s easy to get caught up in the moments, and forget that they are fleeting. It’s easy to trust that the objects we value will be there forever.

If you were to look at the walls of your parents’ house, no doubt they would be adorned with memories captured during special moments of your childhood: photographs.

Time goes by. Moments will only happen once. Objects wither or get damaged. But there’s one thing that can stand the test of time: your photographs.

This week we have been doing a particularly personal and special assignment for Filipe’s family: photographing his Grandfather’s violin.

This fragile instrument hasn’t been played for over 20 years, and is missing a string. It’s also covered in dust, which hides some of its battle scars – but that’s not a big deal. It’s all part of its character.

The biggest problem is there’s only one violin, and a few houses that would love to be its new home. So how do you solve this?

Quite honestly, there is no 100% fix. Unless you give one piece of it to everyone – and then it’s no longer a violin – only one person can inherit it. But through the power of art, everyone can have a keepsake – a life-size, printed memory of this emotionally priceless object. And a memory that, due to the frailty of this old instrument, will probably outlast the object itself (both in printed form and as a digital archive).

Memories are so very precious, so the question is – what is your most precious family item? Do you have family medals, instruments, or other objects that there are only one of? And by the way, when was the last time you held one of your precious memories in your hands, rather than on a phone screen?

How beautiful a violin, rich with music and the hands that held it. What a perfect way to let everyone share in your Grandfather’s memory – with a special photo. Yours are breathtaking! Oh, that weathered wood and steadfast bow.

I have my Grandmother’s blue crockery mixing bowl. I use it when I bake something, and I feel her energy filling my cakes & biscuits batters.

Thanks for another great newsletter too! I’m definitely going to practice my food photography angles now.
